音樂，從來不只是聲音的流動，而是身體、文化與情感的交織。我一直對「音樂如何被表達」這個問題感到興趣：為何同一首樂曲，在不同演奏者的詮釋下，可以呈現出截然不同的情感？這種細膩的變化，來自於音樂家如何運用身體與聲音，將他們對音樂的理解轉化為動態的表現。
我的研究便是深入這個核心問題——音樂的表達機制。我結合音樂學（人文學科）、音樂心理學（社會科學）、3D 動作捕捉技術、人工智慧（電腦科學），希望解開音樂表現背後的奧秘，探索三個關鍵問題：
1. 我們如何感知與理解音樂的結構？（音樂理論、音樂心理學）
2. 音樂家如何透過身體動作與聲音來詮釋音樂？（3D 動作捕捉、人工智慧）
3. 音樂表現如何在不同文化脈絡中展現？（音樂學）
我的研究主要聚焦於西方古典音樂的演奏表現，但我也與民族音樂學者合作，探索不同文化中的音樂表達方式——從中國古琴的細膩韻味、北管戲曲中曲調的靈活變化、客家山歌的吟唱抑揚，到印度傳統音樂演奏中的即興變奏手法。這些音樂傳統各自蘊含著獨特的表達語彙，而我的研究，試圖搭建起這些語彙之間的橋樑。
我的研究獲得了國際學術界的肯定，包括 SEMPRE Award（音樂教育與心理學研究學會）、WIMIR Award（國際音樂資訊檢索學會）、PRE Research Award（英國愛丁堡大學），中央研究院科技菁英年輕學者獎學金，以及臺灣教育部全額公費留學獎學金等榮譽。這些肯定讓我更有信心繼續這段旅程——透過科學與藝術的交匯，讓我們更理解音樂如何被「表達」、被「感受」，最終成為我們文化與生命的一部分。
Music has never been just a flow of sound; it is an intricate interplay of body, culture, and emotion. I have always been fascinated by the question of how music is expressed—why can the same piece of music sound vastly different depending on the performer? These subtle differences arise from how musicians use their bodies and sound to transform their understanding of music into dynamic expression.
My research delves into the mechanisms of musical expression. By integrating musicology (humanities), music psychology (social sciences), 3D motion capture, and artificial intelligence (computer science), I seek to uncover the underlying processes that shape musical performance. I focus on three key questions:
1. How do we perceive and understand musical structure? (Music Theory, Music Psychology)
2. How do musicians use body movements and sound to convey their musical interpretation? (3D Motion Capture, Artificial Intelligence)
3. How does musical expression manifest across different cultural contexts? (Musicology)
While my primary expertise lies in Western classical music performance, I also collaborate with ethnomusicologists to explore expressive practices in diverse musical traditions—ranging from the nuanced glissandi of the 古琴, the melodic transformations in 北管, the melodic inflections of 客家山歌, to the improvisatory variations in Indian classical music. Each of these traditions embodies unique expressive vocabularies, and my research aims to bridge them through interdisciplinary inquiry.
My work has been recognized internationally, receiving honors such as the SEMPRE Award (Society for Education, Music, and Psychology Research), the WIMIR Award (International Society for Music Information Retrieval), and the PRE Research Award (University of Edinburgh). Additionally, I have been awarded 中央研究院科技菁英年輕學者獎學金 and 臺灣教育部全額公費留學獎學金. These recognitions reinforce my commitment to this journey—merging science and art to deepen our understanding of how music is expressed, perceived, and ultimately woven into the fabric of our culture and lives.
